Review: Courageous People Who Changed the World by Heidi Poelman

Courageous People Who Changed the World by Heidi Poelman

Book Description:

From the intrepid efforts of Susan B. Anthony to the quiet courage of Rosa Parks, Little Heroes: Courageous People Who Changed the World is a young child's first introduction to the brave people who fought to make the world a better place. Simple text and adorable illustrations tell the contributions of eight champions of freedom: Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Malala Yousafzai, Harriet Tubman, William Wilberforce, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. A quote from each individual is included on each spread along with colorful, delightful artwork.

Andrea's Review:

I don't have littles at home anymore, but I thought this book was so cute and I think young kids would really enjoy the illustrations. I really liked the quotes and the brief summary of these historical figures. It is a great introduction to some people who have stood up for what was right and made a difference in the world.

I had my ten-year-old read it, and he said he knew about all but one of the people (Malala Yousafzai).

Rorie's Review:

My three younger kids really enjoyed this book. I like that it led us into a good discussion about all the bad things that have happened in our history (and still happen in places) and why it's important to learn about and remember these things so that we don't repeat them. I also like that it shows several different people who saw something that was wrong and worked to fix it, instead of just sitting back and waiting for someone else to do something about it.

Both of my 6-year-olds were amazed to hear the story about Malala - I think mostly because it is something that happened during their lifetime. My 10-year-old enjoyed reading about Rosa Parks, because he remembers learning about her in Kindergarten. I think this book is a good starting point to get kids interested in people that shaped history, and it gives them just enough information to pique their curiosity so they'll want to learn more.

Tarah's Review:

I think my favorite thing about this book is the fact that it's geared towards younger children and is non-fiction. There are so many fun books out there that marketed towards this age, but I know I generally stay away or don't notice those that are non-fiction. This one is just perfect. Not only does it teach little ones some very basics of history, but it also has a good message for each person it talks about. It's also not written in a dry, boring way. The illustrations are super cute and they make you want to pick up the book and look at flip through it because it is so eye-catching. I appreciated that it was very simple. (My 9-12 year old found it too simple, but I told them it wasn't supposed to be geared towards them. They weren't convinced).

Another thing about it that I appreciate as a parent is that it is in board book format. We are so hard on books here, no matter what I try to teach them, and the board books are just more sturdy and hold up better. If they get smudged with little peanut butter and jelly hands, I can just wipe it off and that's that.

Blog Tour: So You Want to See the World? Written and Illustrated by Jason Pruett

So You Want to See the World? Written and Illustrated by Jason Pruett

Book Description:

Send your favorite graduates off on their next adventure! Full of quirky illustrations and fun rhyming text, this book is a great way to recognize all they've accomplished and show them that you're confident they'll succeed in the future. Whether they're heading out into the world or staying close to home, help them mark this important milestone with this inspirational and encouraging gift.

Tarah's Review:

The first thing my kids said when we read it was, "It's like Dr. Seuss!" We are a huge Dr. Seuss fan here so that was fun. I'll also admit to loving books that rhyme. I think they are fun to read and I have loads of appreciation for someone who can not only write, but then make it rhyme. I think that takes a lot of talent.

My kids loved the illustrations. On each page my youngest would spend lots of time looking for something that would become her "favorite". It wasn't just my youngest who enjoyed this book though. All of my kids have read it and they all enjoyed the details you can find on each page.

Andrea's Review:

If you love Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss, you should definitely check out So You Want to See the World? by Jason Pruett. It has a similar message and look to it. The illustrations are very well done, and I thought it was fun that it includes the seven wonders of the world and signs with actual places around the world.

I can see this being a fun story to read with your little ones, or something to give to a graduate.

Rorie's Review:

Dr Seuss is my all-time favorite children's author. The world lost a great person when he passed away. Because of that, I was excited to review this book, as it is very Dr Seuss-ish. The fun rhymes, the illustrations, all of it. It's a fun book about getting out and exploring all the wonderful things this world has to offer.
My children were kept entertained by this book, and my younger two have read it multiple times. This is definitely a keeper.

Asleep on the Hay: A Dust Bowl Christmas by Ben Sowards

Book Description:

It’s Christmas Eve when a knock comes at the door of Paul’s family farmhouse. A small family is stranded due to a broken-down truck and seeks shelter for the evening. Paul’s grandfather not only welcomes them in, but offers them dinner and a bed for the night. Even though it is a season of giving, Paul’s heart is not filled with charity. It’s the height of the Dust Bowl and food is scarce. Why should he share what little he has with strangers? Worse, in order to help the sick baby, Paul will have to sell his beloved calf to buy a part to fix the truck. Angry, he retreats to the barn, where he sleeps and dreams of faraway Bethlehem. In his dream, he visits Mary and Joseph, and their newborn son, Jesus. The family offers Paul food and shelter and warmth—extending to him the love and charity he lacks and teaching him of the true meaning of Christmas.

Asleep on the Hay 1   Asleep on the Hay 2   Asleep on the Hay 3

Review:

Asleep on the Hay depicts the true meaning of Christmas in a short and beautiful story that children and adults of all ages can appreciate. With the consumerism abounding around us, it's hard to imagine a time when there were no presents under a tree (or a tree for that matter), and where those around you would be in such dire straits that they'd need to rely on the goodness of strangers giving the last they had to help. This is a good lesson for children to learn, and for adults to remember.

The illustrations are stunning. Mr. Sowards is a truly talented artist. This would be a great book to display during the Christmas season.

Blog Tour: I Hope They Call Me On A Mission by Ben White

Tour Schedule
I Hope They Call Me On A Mission by Ben White
Illustrated by Corey Egbert

Book Description:

It’s never too young to prepare! This charmingly illustrated picture book teaches children what it’s like to be a missionary, from riding a bike to studying the gospel to having a companion, and everything they can do now to be ready so that when the time comes, they’ll be the best missionaries they can be. Colorful and cute, it’s a perfect gift for baptisms and birthdays.

Review:

I joined this review tour with my seven-year-old son in mind. When the book came I was a little worried that it was more for younger children (the illustrations and the conversation from the first few pages seemed geared for a younger audience). However, I was very happy when my son said that he really liked the book.

He liked that it told about what you do on a mission, and that you don't always get what you want (let in to talk to people, baptizing people, etc.). He liked the letter writing part of the story. He wasn't sure if his friends would like the book or not, but he thought it would be a good book for them to have to learn more about missions.

My eleven-year-old daughter also liked the book. She's into art, and liked that the illustrations were different. She also enjoyed that it told the goods and bads of a mission. She got a kick out of the part that talked about having to eat gross food. She thought it was geared toward younger kids, but had some parts for everyone.

About the Author:

Ben White is the author of 10 Questions to Answer while Preparing for a Mission. He has been a Seminary Teacher from 2003 to the present. He has a M.A. in Religious Education from BYU, B.S. in Marriage, Family, and Human Development from BYU. He is an EFY speaker and has recorded two talks with the Mormon Channel on their “For the Youth” program.

About the Illustrator:

Corey Egbert has always loved books and art, so when he discovered that he could create both at the same time by being an illustrator, he couldn’t have been happier. His illustrations can be seen in The Niuhi Shark Saga books and the album covers of recording artist Rob Taylor. He lives in Buena Vista, Virginia, with his wife Natalya, son Oliver, and their cat, Rex.

Blog Tour: God Bless Us, Every One! by John Rhys-Davies

 *Review*

 God Bless Us, Every One!
The story behind A Christmas Carol
as read by John Rhys-Davies

Book Description:

As Charles Dickens dipped his pen and began to write the classic tale A Christmas Carol in the autumn of 1843, the spirit of the story captured his heart and mind in an extraordinary way. Dwindling sales of his previous books had resulted in a desperate financial situation for Dickens, who had used much of his income to support worthy causes and needy family members. But the book which he had intended as a quick solution to his problems turned out to be much, much more.

This beautifully illustrated volume tells the story behind the writing of Dickens's most famous work and reveals how he discovered the spirit of Christmas for himself with a little help from his own literary characters.

Andrea's Review:

God Bless Us Every One! is a wonderful story with beautiful illustrations. I enjoyed reading about how A Christmas Carol came to be.

It is a bit too lengthy of a read for young children, but the accompanying DVD is fabulous. It's not very long and the music and flying characters were great to hold my kids' attention.

I know it's barely November, but it has me excited to the upcoming Christmas season.

Rorie's review:

You actually get three reviews from me - mine and my two oldest children. :)  Both my kids said that they enjoyed the story although I could tell that their attention was waning, especially my 6-year-old. The story was good, but I think the author used a lot of big words that were over the kids' heads.  I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to watching the DVD with my kids as well.

Joey's review:

I liked how part of it was made up and part of it was true. I liked how the author wrote the letters at the beginning and end to help explain what the book was about.

Braden's review:

I liked how he (Dickens) learned more and found out that some poor people were happy with what they had, and had Christmas in their hearts. I liked how the title says "God Bless Us" in it. I didn't like that it wasn't all true.

Tarah's Review:

While I don't think my kids would particularly be interested in this book (but they may enjoy the CD and we might add it to our things to read/watch before Christmas), I thought the true parts of the story were really interesting. I wish the authors had more of that in this book, instead of rewriting a part of A Christmas Carol.
I enjoyed how it talked about noticing others, and not dwelling too much on our own problems, how joy can be found in any circumstance. It's certainly easier said than done, but something we should probably all strive for.

Blog Tour: Girls Who Choose God by McArthur Krishna and Bethany Brady Spalding

Girls Who Choose God: Stories of Courageous Women From the Bible
by McArthur Krishna and Bethany Brady Spalding

Book Description:

From Eve to Esther, from the Samaritan woman at the well to the widow with her two mites, many women in the Bible have made courageous choices. All through the ages, women have chosen to help, to solve problems, to stand up for others, to strengthen families, and to follow God no matter what. Girls Who Choose God invites young readers (and those who love them) to make important choices of their own, following the examples of great women in the scriptures. With breathtaking illustrations, beautifully told stories, and insightful discussion questions, this delightful book is perfect for sharing, reading aloud, and drawing children into the scriptures.

Review:

When I heard about Girls Who Choose God, I thought it would be a great book for my daughter (even though her reading level is well beyond picture books, the message is for all ages). After she read it I asked her what she thought. She said it was inspirational (her words). She was familiar with most of the women in the book, but some were new, and she enjoyed learning about them. The illustrations aren't a style she enjoys, but they aren't out of place with the story.

As a parent, I appreciated the two choices spelled out for each woman, and then the questions posed to the reader. The scriptural references were also a nice addition.

About the Authors:

McArthur Krishna inherited her grit from her Utah pioneer great-grandmothers. With a master’s degree in communications from BYU, she co-owned Free Range, an award-winning marketing  business focused on telling social justice stories. In 2011, she moved to the Magic Land of India and started writing books. More of her stories can be found at mcarthurkrishna.com.

Bethany Brady Spalding likes to stir things up in the kitchen and in the community. She has founded programs to promote health and nutrition in the USA, South Africa, and India. Bethany currently leads a regional coalition in Richmond, Virginia, to create a healthier food environment for at-risk children. She loves to cook and climb mountains with her husband, Andy, and their three adventurous girls.

About the Illustrator:

Blog Tour: Summer Fit Learning

Summer Fit Learning

Description:

Research shows that kids can suffer from Summer Memory Loss and lose up to 30% of reading and math skills while away from school during the summer. Physical exercise and play improves circulation, increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates the nervous system which results in children thinking more clearly and performing better physically and academically.

Summer Fit workbooks provide parents and kids with a balanced and active approach to summer learning. Each workbook (PreK-5th Grade) includes exercises and activities that reinforce the academic, physical and social aspects of learning to prepare kids for the new school year ahead.

Rorie's Review:

My kids have been using these books since the beginning of summer. They really like that each day's lesson is short and relatively easy to complete. I like that they can finish the lessons quickly but that they still learn how to do new things. My 8-year-old is using the Third to Fourth Grade book and it seems to be just right for where he is at academically. My 6-year-old is using the First to Second Grade book, instead of the K to First Grade because that one seemed like it would be way too easy for him. My kids haven't been very interested in doing the fitness section and I haven't been good at working on the values section with them, although I do think that both are a very good thing to include in the books.

Andrea's Review:

I have been pretty concerned about my kids regressing academically over the summer, so when I heard about Summer Fit Learning I was really excited to have my kids include this program with their summer routine.

The books arrived a few days before we went out of town, so we haven't had a chance to really dig into the full program yet. But, I was really impressed with the workbooks and the variety they include. My ten-year-old dug right in to the worksheets. She didn't know everything right off, but I was happy for the challenge some problems gave her. (And, I appreciated the answer key in the back.) My seven-year-old wasn't as excited about the workbook, but once he and I started he seemed to enjoy it.

I'm looking forward to starting the full program with my kids, and definitely like the idea of getting these again next year so we can start using them right when summer break starts.

Blog Tour: Discover America: From Sea to Shining Sea

Discover America: From Sea to Shining Sea
Illustrations by Julie Olson
Lyrics by Katharine Lee Bates

Book Description:

Follow the patriotic journey of a little red balloon as it makes its way from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States.

Accompanied by the words of one of America’s most beloved anthems America the Beautiful, From Sea to Shining Sea shows the diversity and beauty of our great country through the eyes of our nation’s children. To add an interactive experience, kids all across the United States will be able to go online to send their own balloons on their own journey.

Review:

I recently read this with my first grader. While it doesn't take long to read the words to the poem "America the Beautiful", a young reader can extend his practice time and get a bit of a challenge by reading the book description and author and illustrator info on the jacket.

The illustrations were a fun depiction of different parts of the United States, and we enjoyed the interactive option found on the website (learning about various states and even sending a balloon to a cousin). I can see this as a good, educational option to keep on hand during summer break.

About the Illustrator:

Julie Olson was born in the East, grew up in the Midwest, and now lives in the West. She developed a deep love for all parts of America as she lived in and traveled through various places. Since graduating with a BFA degree in illustration from Brigham Young University, she strives through her work to uplift and encourage others to be better.

Blog Tour: The Sacrament by John Bytheway

The Sacrament by John Bytheway
Illustrated by Nathan Pinnock

Book Description:

For years, John has used a poem during fireside talks to help LDS families understand the importance of the sacrament. With full-color illustrations by Nathan Pinnock, The Sacrament will help children of all ages understand what they should be thinking about during this sacred ordinance. John shares the story of a boy and his grandfather and the memory the grandfather shares with his grandson regarding the lesson he learned about the sacrament when he was a young boy.

Ideal for children from three to twelve and a perfect baptism gift.

Review:

This is an excellent children's book! John Bytheway's story is such a great reminder about why members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints take the sacrament on a weekly basis. I love the lesson the grandfather taught about focusing on what is important, and not getting distracted by everything else around us during this sacred time each week. I also really liked the section at the end that tells about the symbols of the sacrament. It is so important to understand why we do things, and this book is a great way to help teach/remind our children about what the sacrament is all about.

About the Author:

John Bytheway served a mission to the Philippines and later graduated from Brigham Young University. A favorite speaker and teacher, John holds a master’s degree in religious education and is a part-time instructor at BYU. John is the author of many bestselling books and audio products. Blog Tour: One Little Match by Thomas S. Monson

One Little Match by Thomas S. Monson
Illustrated by Dan Burr

Book Description:

Thomas S. Monson loved spending summers at his family's cabin in Utah's Vivian Park. One summer day, he and his best friend, Danny, decided to clear a field so they could gather with their friends and have a campfire that night. The tall, stubborn weeds would not pull out easily. So Tommy had the idea to burn them up instead.
He knew he shouldn't use matches without permission from his parents. But he ignored the feeling that warned him of the danger and raided the matchbox in the cabin. Back in the field, he lit one little match and prepared to set the parched June grass abaze...
Readers of all ages will resonate with this wonderful true story that demonstrates the blessings of obedience and "the dangers that can come from something as small as one little match."
Review:

I was serving in the Primary (the children's organization in my church) in April of 2013. After General Conference that Spring I asked the children what they liked about the talks they heard. One of the older boys said he really liked the story President Monson told about how he lit a field on fire when he was a young boy. I love how the children were able to better relate to our prophet through this example. President Monson is an excellent story teller, and his story about obedience hit home with many conference listeners of all ages.

This story hasn't been far from my mind since then, and I was excited when I heard it was being released as a children's book.

When One Little Match arrived in the mail, my first thought was that Dan Burr's illustrations were incredible! I loved all of the details he included. Younger children might not appreciate this as much as I did, but the old car and the clothing styles shown really added to the overall feel of the book.

The story is excellent for children. While I prefer the wording used in President Monson's conference message for myself, One Little Match gives a little more insight about what "Tommy" enjoyed doing when he was young. It has a great message about the importance of obedience. His point that rules keep us safe, combined with his personal example of the danger that came when he didn't follow the rules is definitely one that kids can understand and will hopefully take to heart.

A is for Abinadi: An Alphabet Book of Scripture Heroes

Book Description

"A is for Abinadi" is the perfect tool for playfully teaching your children the ABCs while also learning about the heroic men and women of the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

Book Review

Well my kids really liked this book. I enjoyed how they are learning while reading. I like how it's good for a lot of different ages. My 3 & 5 year old can learn and review their letters, while my 7 & 8 year old can learn about the people in the scriptures (and my other two can learn about that too). While I didn't love how the book looked, my 8 year old told me that was her favorite part. We also enjoyed finding different items that were hidden on each page.

Book Blast: Little Red Writing by Joan Holub

Little Red Reading

Little Red Writing by Joan Holub:

Acclaimed writer Joan Holub and Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet team up in this hilarious and exuberant retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, in which a brave, little red pencil finds her way through the many perils of writing a story, faces a ravenous pencil sharpener (the Wolf 3000)... and saves the day. Joan Holub has hundreds of pencils. Some are red. Others are glittery, sporty, or full of holiday cheer. They are all super sharp and good at writing books. They’ve helped Joan write more than 130 books, including Zero the Hero and Knuckleheads. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Melissa Sweet has illustrated nearly 100 children’s books, including the Caldecott Honor–winning River of Words and the Sibert Medal–winning Balloons Over Broadway. When not in her studio, Melissa loves to ride her bicycle and hike with her two dogs, Rufus and Nellie. She lives in Rockport, Maine.

About Author Joan Holub:

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children’s books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job. I illustrated my first published children’s book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts — Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee! Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children’s books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

Blog Tour: The Not Even Once Club by Wendy Watson Nelson

Book Description:

The Not Even Once Club is an adorable and appealing way to engage children in a story that will help them choose for themselves to keep the commandments and to never break them. Not even once.

Children will meet Tyler, an energetic boy who is excited to make new friends in his Primary class. They have invited Tyler to join their special club, but first he has to pass the test and keep the club promise.

With illustrations from bestselling illustrator Brandon Dorman,
The Not Even Once Club is a fun and engaging way for parents to help teach their children the importance of keeping the commandments. Included in the back of the book are additional teaching helps for parents and leaders.

Review:

Most of the books I review aren't for my children, but they really enjoy reading/being read to, so when I learned about The Not Even Once Club I jumped at the opportunity to review it.

The first thing that stood out to me about The Not Even Once Club was the illustrations. Brandon Dorman is exceptionally talented, and his work in this book is amazing! My children enjoyed looking through the book, and the pictures really helped hold my youngest child's attention.

The diversity among the children in the book is excellent too. It helps with the message that keeping the commandments is for everyone.

The idea behind this book is really good. We need to make sure our children know about the commandments and the importance of keeping them from a very early age. Temptations are going to come in life, but if we've already made the decision about what we are going to do in certain situations, life will be so much easier.

I've seen some mixed reviews about this book due to what isn't included. While I understand those reviews, I wasn't bothered by it, and most importantly, my children didn't have any concerns about it. What is included seems like just the right amount for a picture book. It provides a good opportunity for further discussion that will fit your family's situation. The Guide for Parents and Children at the end of the book has some great information that can help with discussions.

Tuesdays at the Castle

Tuesdays at the CastleTuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A really cute story about a magical castle that is alive (always building rooms and moving things around) and the royal family that lives there. When half of the royal family is attacked and disappears, 11-year-old Celie and two of her siblings must keep the bad guys from taking over.

I think my 2nd grader will really enjoy this.

If the familiar verse isn't enough to catch your kids' attention, the wonderful pictures in this book should keep them entertained. Plus, the added story about determination is great for kids of all ages.

Gotta Go! Gotta Go!

Gotta Go! Gotta Go! (Sunburst Book)Gotta Go! Gotta Go! by Sam Swope

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another favorite book to read with my kids. A fun story about the life cycle of a caterpillar/butterfly. The repetition of "gotta go, gotta go" is fun for the kids to repeat throughout the story.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I haven't thought to post reviews of the books I read with my kids, but this one was so cute. It inspired me to read it with an accent (although I may have sounded more Southern than Cowboy). Very fun story that teaches a few things about dinosaurs.
