Escape to Everly Manor by Chalon Linton
Book Description:
Nineteen-year-old Lizzy and her young brother, Thomas, find themselves orphaned after a tragic accident claims the lives of their parents. Their estranged Uncle Cline arrives to claim his inheritance, and his roguish ways cast a shadow over the manor. Both the family estate and guardianship of his niece and nephew were left to him, and diabolical Uncle Cline is determined to indulge in his newfound wealth and rid himself of his charges. Desperate to save her brother from a dangerous life at sea, and herself from being married off to a detestable old gentleman, Lizzy knows there is only one choice left—they must run.
Lizzy and Thomas sneak away and find refuge in an abandoned cabin. There they remain hidden—until fate acquaints Lizzy with Mr. Barton, a charming gentleman who is immediately intrigued by the mysterious young woman. Concealing her identity, Lizzy is unaware that there is much more to this compassionate man than meets the eye. Through his kindness to herself and her brother, Lizzy begins to trust him. Soon Lizzy realizes Mr. Barton may be her best hope for a life in which she can live—and love—as she chooses . . .
Rorie's Review:
This book definitely doesn't start off slow, that's for sure. The reader is plunged head-first into the mixed-up world of Lizzy and her brother, Thomas. In many of the other Regency books I've read the women have been very sheltered all their lives, and have never had to think about much more than shopping for a new wardrobe or winning the best match. Lizzy is not like that. We don't really know how high up in the social class she is, but she was able to competently support herself and Thomas after they left her uncle.
Speaking of Thomas, Lizzy's devotion to her brother was heartwarming. She was prepared to do pretty much anything to keep him safe. The main story line was intriguing. I enjoyed how she initially met Mr. Barton and how she came to find out his identity. The action part of the story was good, then really good, then kind of soap-operaish, then (thankfully) it went back to being good. But yes, the story does get a bit cheesy at times. When I initially thought the problem had been solved, my reaction was "That's it? That was kind of anticlimactic." Thankfully, that was just a teaser, and we got to experience the full story a bit later on. Overall, I did enjoy this story, and look forward to reading more from this author.
Andrea's Review:
I've enjoyed the two other books I've read by Chalon Linton, so I was excited when I heard she had a new novel out. Escape to Everly Manor started out strong for me. Lizzy was so brave to leave all she knew to escape the life her uncle was trying to thrust upon her and her younger brother.
I enjoyed the characters, especially Barton. He didn't let himself become jaded, and was always trying to help others. Lizzy was selfless too, but maybe to a fault. She never put herself first and that actually didn’t make everything better for those she was trying to hard to help. Thomas was a sweetheart.
I got distracted a few times so it took me longer to finish reading than I anticipated. It really could have been my mood, but it seemed a little over the top with all the bad things going down.
On the whole it was a clean, entertaining read, and I'd read more by this author.
Tarah's Review:
I'm actually going to disagree with the other two reviews a tiny bit. I didn't find this story soap-operaish, or over the top with all the bad things happening. Everything seems to flow very smoothly for my taste. Well, except for the communication aspect, but really, where would half the stories I read go if there wasn't some communication problem. I was taken along for the ride, and it definitely didn't take me long to finish this story.
I love a good, kind, male lead and Barton certainly fits the bill. I enjoy reading about nice people. It makes me take a good look at my life and see if there is anything I should be doing differently. I think that's the mark of a good story. Sure, I may read a lot of fiction "mind-candy" but lessons can certainly be learned from them, and a good story will make you think about who you are as a person. Not only was Bartons a good example, but Lizzy's loyalty and love also made me take a good look inside.
I'm excited to pass this book on to my reading friends to see what they think of it. It is definitely one I will be reading again. Ooo. I bet this would be a good one to listen to while I do laundry and the dishes. I bet my daughter would enjoy it as well.
