Long Journey Home by Sarah M. Eden

Book Description:

Widowed by war, Maura O’Connor has raised her son alone under the weight of poverty in the unforgiving slums of New York City. That harsh and difficult life has taken a toll on them both. Desperate to save her son from the misery around them, she moves them both to the tiny western town of Hope Springs, where her late husband’s family lives, hoping that the decade of silence between them does not mean she and Aidan will be rejected outright. Her son needs family, and she would endure anything to see him happy.

Ryan Callaghan has worked the land belonging to the late Granny Claire for years, dreaming of one day claiming it as his own. Living in his brother’s home affords him no freedom, no stability, no joy. The arrangement is even harder on his mother, whose health is quickly deteriorating. A risky investment in the land has finally begun to pay off, and he is at last in a position to secure a better future for them both. When use of the home is, without warning, offered to a newly arrived widow and her son, that future is entirely uncertain.

Both Maura and Ryan desperately need the Claire farm, for their own futures as well as those of the loved ones who depend on them. Neither can remain in Hope Springs without the house and land, but only one can claim it in the end.

Andrea's Review:

I love Sarah M. Eden's books! She is so amazingly talented, and is constantly coming up with stories that include people that I care about.

I was happy to visit Hope Springs again with Long Journey Home. Eden did such a good job portraying a mother's love. Maura had it rough in New York City, but she had people who depended on her and even though it wasn't a good place to live, the decision to leave was difficult and required a huge sacrifice on her part.

I've come to care for the O'Connor family throughout this series, and it was wonderful to see them so welcoming of Maura and her son. I may have been reading too quickly and overlooked this, but I didn't catch why the O'Connors hadn't kept in touch with Maura?

Ryan was also a great character. As much as he wanted the land and house, he couldn't let that destroy his inner goodness. I really liked how both he and Maura made sacrifices out of the goodness of their hearts.

I highly recommend this series, and look forward to reading this and the other books in the series again.

Tarah's Review:

This series just keeps getting better and better, and the strange thing is, it gets better the more you read it. I will admit that Tavish's story is still my favorite, but I can't wait for even more of the series to come out.

I really enjoyed the sort of off-shoot from the O'Connor family. I mean, she's family, but not directly, and Ryan isn't family, but has always wanted to be. How can not love this family? Oh, my heart aches for them, and they seriously would be people that you'd want to surround yourself with.

Maura is a great character, and I related to her in just the smallest way, which is silly, but while I was reading this book I had the worst cough ever. I kept hacking up a lung, and I realize it definitely isn't as serious as what Maura was going through, but I felt sympathy for her.

This is definitely something that I would love to pass on to my reader friends and have a permanent place on my bookshelf so I can visit Hope Springs whenever I feel like it.
