This is the beginning of a little series that I’ve been working on for a long time that I’m calling: “The Eleven Things” series. This is the first one called: Eleven Things You Probably Didn’t Know about the Book of Mormon. I’ve found over nearly 20 years of teaching adult and young adult institute that many miss the hidden gems in the scriptures. They miss the details and many of the “ah-ha moments” that are densely packed into Holy Writ. You will love this book. It is a fun read. You'll have lots of ah-ha moments. It will excite you to learn even more about the incomparable Book of Mormon. You will learn things you've just never known before.
Generally, if you are purchasing this eBook, you’re a self-selected student of the scriptures and likely seasoned in the scriptures, or you’re a curious student of the gospel who just thirsts for learning and wants to know more, or you unabashedly have a high degree of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) so you want to be sure you are up to date on things you didn’t know.
Rorie's Review:
This is a short, quick read, and it's full of Book of Mormon (and even a bit of Bible) facts that are not commonly known. Thus, the title...although in chapter 4 where the author tells us something that he says most Latter-Day Saints probably know...well, I had no idea. I'm definitely no scriptorian, but I do find history fascinating, so it was really interesting to read this book.
I struggled with the e-book format, mainly because when I'm reading a non-fiction book, I like to mark passages that really stand out to me, and it's just not the same on a tablet as it is with a physical copy of the book. I marked some places here, but it took me several minutes to figure out how to find them again. (I am also not a tech-friendly person.)
I can't really go into any detail about the parts of this book that really stood out to me, so I'll just recommend that you go read this book yourself and see how many new things you can learn about this great book.
Tarah's Review:
If I'm going to read a non-fiction book, it definitely helps if it's a short one :) And Eleven Things You Probably Didn't Know about the Book of Mormon fit that bill nicely. It was a very quick read that I could read in one setting, which generally doesn't apply to non-fiction.
My favorite chapter by far was Chapter 5 Names have Significance. I really enjoyed learning about Theophoric (isn't that a great word?!?) names. I've always had a thing about names, and this chapter was fascinating to me.
While I generally enjoy books (non-fiction books anyway) to have a more casual talkative style, I realized with this one that that only works for me if I know the author and can hear them talking to me. I don't know anything about Scot Proctor, so even though it was like he was talking I struggled with that because I couldn't "hear it" or picture it because I know nothing about him.
Andrea's Review:
The title of this short book held true-most of what I read was new to me. It's written in a conversational tone, and at times takes some little side jaunts to "keep things fun". I would definitely recommend reading it over having your phone read it to you. It's the kind of book that takes more focus than Siri can help you get.
A few of the points I didn't take in quite like others as they weren't facts but supposition. Those things were still interesting possibilities, but I wouldn't feel comfortable passing them along as anything other than someone's idea.
The "thing" that stood out to me most was item two "A Sacred Box". I don't want to give away the details, but I will just say that I hadn't considered the size to be anything other than artists renderings.
