Blog Tour: The Lady in the Coppergate Tower by Nancy Campbell Allen

Book Description:

Hazel Hughes has spent her life believing she is a Medium—someone who can talk to ghosts. But as of yet, that skill has remained frustratingly elusive. She is also suffering from a reoccurring childhood dream of someone who looks almost exactly like Hazel, but this dream version of herself is slowly going mad.

Sam MacInnes is a talented surgeon who runs in the highest social circles thanks to his family’s position and history. When Sam hires Hazel to assist him with his medical practice, he is immediately drawn to her intelligence, wit, and beauty.

Their potential relationship is derailed one evening when a mysterious count arrives in London and reveals to Hazel the truth about her past: she was abducted at birth and her twin sister has fallen dangerously ill.

Hazel agrees to travel to Romania with Count Petrescu in order to save her sister, and Sam insists on accompanying her. The count has secrets, though, and the journey grows more sinister with every mile that draws Hazel closer to her homeland. Even as her feelings for Sam become deeper and more complicated, she fears she might not survive the quest to save her sister with her heart intact, not to mention her life. She must learn to draw on gifts she doesn’t know she has if they are going to ever return home again.

Hazel and Sam must fight their way past dark magic, clockwork beasts, and their own insecurities as they try to reach her sister in the impenetrable Coppergate Tower before time runs out.

Rorie's Review:

The first time I read Beauty and the Clockwork Beast by this author, I was taken aback by the Steampunk genre. I wasn't expecting it and wasn't sure what to think. My hesitation quickly turned to enjoyment though, and that became one of my favorite stories to read. I have enjoyed each of Allen's stories in this series and this one was no exception.

I enjoyed getting to know Hazel and Sam better and loved Hazel's unusual sense of adventure. (Even if she didn't!) Eugene was a riot and it was easy to forget that he was a 'ton, not a human. Allen brings each one of her characters to life in such a way that the reader really feels like they know them.

This was such a fun story to read and I know I'll be reading it over and over again. I hope that Emme and Oliver get their own stories too... not only because I want to get to know them better, but also because I don't want this series to end!

Andrea's Review:

Steampunk isn't a genre I seek out, but I have enjoyed this steampunk series by Nancy Campbell Allen. The Lady in the Coppergate Tower was a fast and enjoyable read. It had some fun twists and turns and interesting characters.

I was a little confused at the beginning about who was who. Names were at least somewhat familiar from the other books in the series, but it took awhile to place everyone.

I will admit that I was thinking this was a Sleeping Beauty retelling (I'm not sure why-maybe something about the name or from the cover), even though Campbell already did that fairy tale remake. It was similar to Rapunzel but a bit of a stretch. I do think being focused on trying to fit it probably lessened my enjoyment a little, so I would recommend just reading for this story's sake and not trying to fit it into a retelling.

It was a good summer read, and a fun addition to the Proper Romance Line.

Tarah's Review:

It's Sam's turn for a book! I love Sam! I've been waiting and waiting for this book for a long time, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Ever since Beauty and the Clockwork Beast came out I've enjoyed Sam's character. Do you need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one? Probably not, but it would definitely make it so you had a deeper appreciation for the characters and what they've been through.

Hazel was an interesting character to get to know, and you feel for her and the strange things that keep happening in her head, and the weird relatives that come to visit, and her relationship with Sam. It's all set up so you jump on board and cheer for her right away.

I will admit that this as a retelling of Rapunzel confused me. The whole time I kept thinking it was Sleeping Beauty, but Allen had already done that. I guess I saw glimpses of Rapunzel, I mean there was a girl in a tower, but it wasn't as overt as her other books have been.

I would definitely read this again, and recommend it to my friends. I'm already looking forward to Oliver's story in the next book.
