Blog Tour: Rocky Road by Josi S. Kilpack

Review * Giveaway

rocky road
Tour Schedule

Book Description:

It was supposed to be a girls’ weekend in scenic St. George, Utah that would include shopping, trying out the local cuisine, and participating in a breast cancer fundraiser. The fact that one of the organizers of the fundraising event, a local doctor, disappeared two months ago was not supposed to be Sadie’s problem. In fact, she refuses to participate in the grassroots investigation her friend Caro, and Caro’s cousin, Tess, have put together prior to her arrival. But then she meets the ex-wife of the missing doctor. How could she not ask a few questions . . . that lead to a few more questions . . . that lead to a small town and yet even more questions. Before she knows it, Sadie is in the middle of yet another murder investigation and trying to piece together a convoluted trail of good intentions, hidden motivations, and philanthropy turned big business.

Review:

Rocky Road is a great addition to the Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mysteries. When I first heard about this book I was excited that it was taking place in a familiar location (St. George, Utah). The story was very intriguing, and my suspicions were proved wrong with Kilpack's twists and turns.

The resolution was a big surprise. It all made sense after it was revealed, but I'll admit I was a bit sad about it. The "bad guy" was so smooth. I was definitely taken in, and the idea of someone doing everything this person did is just sad (maybe the idea hit me harder being familiar with the community-yes, I know this is fiction, but the idea of this type of deceit was just sad).

The recipes in this book sound so delicious! I can't wait to give them a try. And, the sneak peak of Josi's next book is such a great way to end this book. I am really looking forward to learning more about Sadie's extended family, and how the mystery presented will unfold.

Rocky Road is clean with a great amount of suspense. I missed having Pete in this story, but he is mentioned enough throughout that it keeps those interested in their romance happy.

If you are looking for an entertaining suspense that is a quick read, don't miss Rocky Road and the rest of the Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mysteries.

Blog Tour: Curse of the Broomstaff (Janitors #3) by Tyler Whitesides

Tour Schedule

Book Description:

A secret society of Janitors with wizard-like powers continue their battle, and now, the stakes are even higher. The Bureau of Educational Maintenance is after Alan Zumbro and this time they mean business - deadly business. Spencer, Daisy, and their little team of rebels must find the source of all magical Glop and destroy it before it can destroy the world as we know it. No small task with the BEM and their monster toxites at their heels. It's a wild and dangerous ride as they follow the trail of clues all the way to the hiding place of the mysterious aurans: guardians of a secret landfill. What they discover there will change the way Spencer sees himself, not to mention the fate of the rebels.

Book Review:

Have I mentioned my love for Juvenile Fiction? I must has mentioned it a time or two. This whole Janitor series gets me excited to read these three books to my kids. They might be a little young for it, but I think I'm going to try anyway. All of the books are clean and fun.

Curse of the Broomstaff has Spencer discovering new abilities, reforming old friendships, making new allies, and having to deal with his germaphobia in the middle of a landfill, and bathroom, and lunchroom. Daisy stays sweet but a little less naive and more deadly with her cleaning supplies.  I have a harder time relating to Spencer because I'm not a 12 year old boy (don't get me wrong, he's a great character, it just that...well, I'm not a boy, and I honestly think young boys are weird) but Daisy, she's a character that just makes me smile. While people may make fun of her and ignore her and her random thoughts, I think she's got things figured out pretty well. She definitely knows what it takes to be a loyal friend.

It doesn't seem to be the final book in the series like I thought it would be, so the problem is I now have to wait for the next book to come out...sigh. But if you are looking for good books for your kids to read, or if you are like me and just enjoy Juvenile Fiction, then this is a great series for you to try out.

Blog Tour: Stranded by Dani Pettrey

Review * Giveaway

Book Description:

Stranded (Alaskan Courage #3)

When her friend vanishes from a cruise ship, reporter Darcy St. James isn't satisfied with their explanation that she simply left her job of her own accord. Something isn't lining up, and Darcy believes the only way to find the truth is to put herself in Abby's position. Within days, Darcy learns her friend wasn't the only person to disappear mysteriously. Last summer, a woman vanished under almost identical circumstances.

Gage McKenna has taken a summer-long stint leading adventure excursions for the passengers of various cruise lines that dock for a few days of sightseeing. He's surprised to find Darcy working aboard one of the ships, investigating a troubling report. Something sinister is going on and the deeper they dig the more Gage fears they've only discovered the tip of the iceberg.

Tarah's Review:

When I saw that Dani Pettrey had come out with a new book, I got really excited.  I enjoyed Submerged and really liked Shattered. I was excited to see Gage's story continue with Darcy. Right away I was drawn into the book wondering what was going to happen. I will admit to some confusion though. Maybe it's because some time had past from when I read Shattered but there were things that I didn't ever remember being discussed that apparently were.

I found Darcy to be a strong character, and I loved her spunk, enthusiasm, and loyalty. Her character had me looking at myself and wondering what kind of friend I am to people.

Overall I would recommend the book, and I'm excited to see what happens with Kayden, but it wasn't my favorite out of the three written so far. I think it's because Gage spent a lot of the time being angry.  If I hadn't gotten to know him in the last book I don't know that I would have liked him very much in this one.  The climax seemed a little rushed too, but I will read this again, and am eagerly awaiting her next book to come out. The Christen Fiction genre is quickly becoming a fast favorite of mine.

Andrea's Review:

I listened to another Dani Pettrey book awhile ago and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to read more of her work. I didn't realize that Stranded was the third book in a series when I started it though. The book I listened to was the first, so I did feel a little lost at times when things were referred to that must have happened in the second book.

I really liked that this was clean, although it seemed a lot more focused on spiritual conversion than I remembered Pettrey's other book to be. The mystery portion of the book was good, but I found that the conversion parts didn't flow very well at times with the rest if the story.

I liked the characters and was surprised at the bad guy. Pettrey kept me guessing. I had some suspicions, but I was somewhat surprised about everyone that was involved.

Cover Reveal & Giveaway: The Ripple Effect Novella Series

The Ripple Effect Romance Novella Series
Enjoy this exciting new series of clean novellas by six critically-acclaimed authors.

"Like a pebble tossed into calm water, a simple act can ripple outward and have a far-reaching effect on those we meet, perhaps setting a life on a different course—one filled with excitement, adventure, and sometimes even love."

Book 1: Home Matters by Julie N. Ford
Book 2: Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin
Book 3: Righting A Wrong by Rachael Anderson
Book 4: Lost and Found by Karey White
Book 5: Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver
Book 6: Immersed in Love by Jennifer Griffith

Home Matters by Julie N. Ford

According to her mother, Olivia Pembroke was born to be a star. But how is she supposed to be famous when she can't even get a decent acting gig? Her lucky break comes when she lands an audition for a wildly popular home improvement show. Even though she has no design training and has never even held a power tool, she refuses to let that stop her. She's confident that her destiny is finally within reach.

When her affections are torn between her heartthrob co-host and the irritating, yet somehow endearing lead contractor, does she continue to reach for the stars? Or does she design a new happily ever after? One that leads not to the fading lights of fame and fortune, but to a love that will burn forever.

Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin

Drew Westfall wants nothing more than to forget what he had to do in the name of "smart" business. Cutting off all ties with his parents—including handing over the entire contents of his trust fund to a charity—he takes off for Bridger, Colorado where his best friend has an extra room for him. It doesn't take long for him to realize that his business degree won’t do him much good in a town as small as Bridger, but he's broke and has nowhere else to go.

Eden Torresi has every reason to wallow. Not only did she lose her mother, but she had to drop out of nursing school and is in a relationship with a guy unwilling to commit. But Eden isn't the wallowing type. Instead, she chooses to spend most of her time taking care of the seniors at Silver Linings Nursing home. When she learns that her boyfriend's new roommate is down on his luck, her caring nature makes her want to reach out to him and offer what help she can. But the more time they spend together, the more complicated things get, especially when the seniors of Silver Linings decide to play matchmaker.

Righting a Wrong by Rachael Anderson

Seven years ago, Cambri Blaine fled her small hometown of Bridger, Colorado after her senior year ended in a fiasco. Only Jace Sutton knew the real reason why—that she was a spineless coward. Now, seven years later, her father's been in an accident and needs help, and Cambr has no choice but to return home. So with trepidation, she takes a leave of absence from the landscape architecture firm where she works and boards a plane, hoping against hope that Jace is no longer around and that the past can stay where it belongs—in the past.

If only life worked that way.

Jace never expected to see Cambri again. After she’d led him on, bruised his heart, and left town without a backward glance, he was forced to pick up the pieces and try not to hate her for it. Eventually, he put it behind him and moved on, creating a life for himself in his beloved hometown. But now that Cambri is back and looking more beautiful and sophisticated than ever, some of those old feelings resurface, and Jake instinctively knows, for the sake of his heart, that he needs to avoid her at all costs.

If only it were that easy.

Lost and Found by Karey White

Lydia was supposed to have an adventurous and exciting summer. Instead she's done nothing more than read and eat takeout. Now it's time to go home, and what does she have to show for it? A big fat nothing. Unless, of course, her trip to the airport somehow turns into something more than just a flight home.

Blake feels like he's been sent on a wild goose chase. While work is piling up back in Denver, he's on the other side of the country, hunting for some mysterious box that his grandfather left him. Well, no more. Nothing inside that box could possibly be more important than the opportunity to make it as the youngest partner at his firm. So he's going home, and that's that. But that's before he discovers his flight has been cancelled.

When these two strangers meet at the airport, they make a split-second decision to search for the box together. Maybe with both of them on the hunt, Lydia can have her adventure and Blake can find the box. And maybe, if they’re lucky, they’ll even find some romance.

Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver

Thirty seven year old Francie Davis, a recent widow and empty nester, gets to attend college at last. She’s sure her luck has changed when she also lands a job on campus that will pay her tuition, as administrative assistant to a history professor. When her handsome new boss yells at her on the first day of work, Francie worries she will never be good enough.

For Professor Alex Diederik, life is going downhill fast. Not only is his bitter ex-wife trying to poison their only daughter against him, but now his one place of solace—his work environment—is being complicated by his attractive new administrative assistant. She drives home his feelings of failure as a husband and father, and Alex wonders if hiring her was the right thing to do.

Francie will have to put aside her hurt and insecurities or risk her dreams, while Alex must look outside himself if he’s to mend the breach with his daughter. And, perhaps, find someone who can help heal his pain.

Immersed in Love by Jennifer Griffith

Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever.

But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest.

Until… Erik.

Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she'd never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

Blog Tour: Fight For You by Misty Moncur

Spotlight * Giveaway

Book Description:

The fiercest battles in life

are not fought on the battlefield

Keturah fought her way into Helaman’s army. Now she's in Judea building fortifications, and the only thing she’s fought so far is boredom. The work is hard, and the other soldiers don’t think she can pull her weight. Her brothers are becoming strangers, and Zeke’s jealousy is getting worse—because Keturah is falling in love with the wrong warrior.

But she’s not about to let cruel pranks and hurt feelings keep her from doing what she knows to be right. She completes every order with faithfulness—a hasty retreat from the Lamanite army, a spy mission into the enemy stronghold, a midnight assassination. From burying the dead to whiling away hours on guard duty, Keturah will do whatever it takes to protect her religion, her freedom, her peace, and her family.

But in a camp of two thousand boys, the most important thing she has to protect is her heart.

Spotlight:

I had the opportunity to read a previous version of Fight For You in May of 2012 (previously titled Stripling Warrior). It is a great sequel to Daughter of Helaman (2011 Whitney Award finalist), and I'm very glad to have followed Misty's journey in getting this second book "shined up" and published!

If you enjoy historical fiction based on scriptural stories, especially a story with a strong female character, don't miss Fight For You!

About the Author:

Misty Moncur wanted to be Indiana Jones when she grew up. Instead, she became an author and has her adventures at home. In her jammies. With her imagination. And pens that she keeps running dry.

Misty lives in a marsh near a very salty lake in Utah with her husband and children, where they cuddle up in the evenings and read their Kindles. Well, she does anyway.

Rocky Road

Book Description:

It was supposed to be a girls’ weekend in scenic St. George, Utah that would include shopping, trying out the local cuisine, and participating in a breast cancer fundraiser.

Blog Tour: A Good-Lookin' Man by Marcia Lynn McClure

Goodlookin Man copy

Book Description:

However, in an instant—in less than a breath or the bat of an eyelid—the elusive pepper spray hiding somewhere in her purse was all but forgotten. For standing before her—right there before her, not three feet away—was the best-looking, most gorgeous, handsomest man she had ever seen in all her life! “No, seriously,” she thought out loud with lingering bewilderment at how perfectly stunning the man standing before her was, wearing a worn pair of Levi’s, dusty cowboy boots, and a short-sleeved, plaid-print, snap-up shirt that hung open, revealing a bronzed, perfectly sculpted torso that was simply a mass of muscles. She was so unsettled by the man’s appearance that she wasn’t sure whether she was whispering aloud to herself or her car. Either way, the man asked, “Beg your pardon, ma’am?” “Oh…oh, nothing,” Fairlee said as she began rummaging in her purse again. But the man’s presence and appearance had entirely rattled her. As her awe-inspired brain obviously quit sending out instructions to the rest of her body, Fairlee felt her purse slip from her hands—watched in humiliated dismay as its contents tumbled out and scattered over the shoulder of the road.

I saw that this was labeled as a "clean romance". I love romance, and I love clean, so I thought I would give it a shot. I was embarrassed by the title though, and I made sure my husband never saw me reading it :) Here's what I think, this book is like a guilty pleasure. I probably won't admit that I've read it, won't bring it up in conversation, but it was silly and light-hearted. It had an all night make-out session that made me slightly uncomfortable. There was no language (that I remember), sex or violence. McClure says it best at the end of the book when she says, "I know A Good-Lookin' Man didn't change your life...but...I hope you had fun with it-that it let you escape for a while, giggle, and smile." And it did. One of my favorite things with this book is her "Snippets" at the end. McClure tells about her ideas for the book, and she is just funny and real.

After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough. Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

Review:

I wasn't much of a Jane Austen fan until I saw the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice. I've heard from many diehard Austen fans that this version isn't their favorite, but it was just right to draw me into Austen's stories. I loved the characters, and the actors did such a great job! I don't buy many movies, but I did buy this one, and I got a kick out of the first chapter of My Own Mr. Darcy as Lizzie describes her connection to the movie.

As the story went on, I was a little surprised that Lizzie didn't seem to have matured in the six years since the first chapter. But, I liked the story a lot. And either she matured as the story went on, or I got used to her.

This is the type of book that I kept thinking, "Just one more chapter." I stayed up way too late reading! Even before chapter one, I was drawn in by the sweet dedication to the author's mom.

If you are an Austen fan, and like a fun, clean romance, don't miss My Own Mr. Darcy.

Gage McKenna has taken a summer-long stint leading adventure excursions for the passengers of various cruise lines that dock for a few days of sightseeing. Book Blast: The Picture by William Hazelgrove

pitcher
Book Description:

“I never knew I had an arm until this guy called out, “Hey you want to try and get a ball in the hole, sonny?” I was only nine, but mom said, “come on, let’s play.” This Carney guy with no teeth and a fuming cigarette hands me five blue rubber balls and says if I throw three in the hole we win a prize. He’s grinning, because he took mom’s five bucks and figures a sucker is born every minute. That really got me, because we didn’t have any money after Fernando took off, and he only comes back to beat up mom and steal our money. So I really wanted to get mom back something, you know, for her five bucks.” A boy with a golden arm but no money for lessons. A mother who wants to give her son his dream before she dies. A broken down World Series pitcher who cannot go on after the death of his wife. These are the elements of The Pitcher. A story of a man at the end of his dream and a boy whose dream is to make his high school baseball team. In the tradition of The Natural and The Field of Dreams, this is a mythic story about how a man and a boy meet in the crossroads of their life and find a way to go on.
