The Neverland Inn by K.C. Grant

Book Description:

Daniel Cavanaugh has it all—a lucrative career as a lawyer, a gorgeous fiancée, and his future mapped out for him. So why is he feeling increasingly dissatisfied with his life? When the assignment to handle his late grandmother's estate takes him to the California coast, Daniel welcomes the escape. Staying at the nearby bed-and-breakfast isn't really his style, but he soon realizes the inn may hold the key to the answers he's been seeking.

Spindrift Cove has few opportunities for a young unmarried woman like Sarah Michaels. Even so, she enjoys her solitude as owner and chef at the Neverland Inn. She thrives on catering to the needs of her guests and treating them to her fantastic cooking. But when Daniel walks through her door, he immediately tests her patience. Though he is handsome and well-bred, she finds him insufferable. Soon, however, the tranquility of the inn works its magic, and Daniel and Sarah forge a sweet and unexpected connection—until the life he left behind in the city demands his return and it seems that a happily ever after may not be on the menu after all.

Andrea's Review:

My idea of a great vacation is going somewhere beautiful and slow-paced to relax. Don't get me wrong, traveling and visiting many towns, museums and monuments is great too, but a true vacation to me isn't being on-the-go the whole time. K.C. Grant's invention of the Neverland Inn sounds like the perfect vacation spot for me.

I was very intrigued by the description of The Neverland Inn, and I loved the cover. Everything from the font to the picture conveyed the feel I think the author or publisher was hoping for.

The story is sweet, and I liked the message about taking time to slow down and evaluate our lives. I wish I'd been able to connect with the characters though. They had both dealt with tragedy in their lives, and Sarah had made the best of it, while Daniel was struggling. The way they met was quite funny, but something about the dialogue didn't always flow well for me. And their connection was quite fast. I did like how it started out rough and grew, but it felt like something that should have taken more than a few days.

I've read quite a few culinary novels and it's fun that recipes are included at the end of most chapters. There are several in The Neverland Inn that I'm tempted to try making. Once or twice the author included some cooking instructions as part of the novel, and that was somewhat distracting to me.

This is clean and worth the read if you have the time.

Rorie's Review:

I loved the setting of this story. I've been to the redwoods a few times and they are such a magical, beautiful location. The small-town feel of Spindrift Cove and Sarah's peacefully secluded Neverland Inn sound a place I would love to visit.
I didn't know (or didn't remember) that this book included recipes, so that was a pleasant surprise. I can't wait to try some of them out.

The story itself was just ok for me. I was able to finish it in two days, and it kept my attention, but it just didn't wow me. The relationship between Sarah and Daniel took a while to develop (yay for no insta-romance!) but once they both admitted that they had feelings for each other, there wasn't a whole lot more development involved. The family issues that Daniel had were such a huge part of the backstory, but I feel that the final confrontation didn't live up to what it felt like it should have been.

I'm not sure if I've read anything else from this author before, but even though this particular story wasn't my favorite, I like her writing style and would definitely read something from her again.

Tarah's Review:

First of all, I would totally pick this up from the shelf to see what it was about. The cover is gorgeous. I love the colors that were chosen and the way it captures the feeling of the book. Great job to whoever designed that.

I enjoyed the premise of the story, but I'm not super sad that it was a pretty short book. I never really connected with Sarah or Daniel. They were okay, but something about each of them was just a little off. And honestly, maybe it was because it was a shorter book. Maybe if it was longer and flushed out a little more it would have felt better. I felt like the dog was the best character in the novel.

I didn't mind the way their romance developed. I felt like timing wise it was just fine and natural. Not rushed and not angsty. But I would have liked a little more. More conversations that weren't stilted (although I do understand that. I'm socially inept so I get that more than one would imagine). More description of their time together instead of just saying that they spent some pleasant time together.

It's a quick read and it's cute. There is even a little suspense thrown in that I was not expecting. If you have an hour or two and are looking for a light clean romance, you might give this one a try.
