Blog Tour: Promises and Primroses by Josi S. Kilpack

Promises and Primroses by Josi S. Kilpack

Book Description:

Lord Elliott Mayfield aims to correct the very messy marital mistakes and spousal scandals of his brothers and sisters by requiring his nieces and nephews to choose worthy companions.  If they choose wisely, they will receive their generous share of the family’s inheritance.

Peter, Elliott’s eldest nephew, thinks the entire idea is ridiculous. A widower with two young daughters, he simply needs a governess, not a wife. Julia Hollingsworth certainly has the credentials and the experience, but is altogether too young and pretty for such a job. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?

Julia loves working as a governess, despite the objections of her mother, Amelia. And as it turns out, Amelia has a lot to say about the Mayfield men—none of it good. But Julia dismisses the rumors of ruined reputations and instead concentrates on helping Peter with his children and his fledgling business in canine husbandry. His kindness and gentleness is endearing—and increasingly attractive.

But Amelia, whose heart was broken thirty years ago by none other than Elliott Mayfield, is determined to prevent any relationship from blooming either between Peter and Julia—or between herself and Elliott.

Hearts and history collide as both couples must face their pasts and decide if risking it all is worth the promise of new love and a new future.

Rorie's Review:

Oo, I just noticed that this book is part of the Mayfield Family series. This excites me because I'd really like to find out more about this family. I really enjoyed this story, although I found myself getting frustrated that the reader only got hints here and there about all of the scandals that were part of the Mayfield legacy. I admit I'm an overly curious sort, but I really wanted to know ALL of the details. Just getting bits and pieces of the story was driving me nuts.

Aside from that part though, I enjoyed getting to know Elliott, Peter, Julia and Amelia. I wasn't expecting two different relationships, but it was enjoyable seeing how they both played out. Forgiveness, hurt, misunderstandings and bitterness are a big part of this book and it kind of makes you look at yourself to see where you could change.

I'm looking forward to future books not only with the Mayfield Family, but also in the Proper Romance series.

Andrea's Review:

I can't resist a Proper Romance-it really is a great line of books that you should check out if you haven't yet.

The cover of Promises and Primroses is eye catching, and the graphic that says Mayfield Family Series makes it that much more interesting for me. I have no idea how many other books will be in the series, but I liked that book one felt complete. There are definitely things that aren't explained, but the main characters in this book get a happy ending (a must have for me).

I will admit I was a little nervous when I opened the book and saw the family pedigree. Sometimes a book will have a cast of characters, and that makes me think too much will be going on and I'll be lost. I don't like having to refer back to something like that to know who's who. Thankfully, that wasn't an issue with this story. There is definitely mention of other family members, but the focus wasn't on more than four people, and that wasn't overwhelming.

I enjoyed the story and really felt for Julia (especially at the beginning). This was a fast read for me, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Tarah's Review:

I will admit I was concerned when I saw that this book was going to have four different perspectives. I love knowing who is thinking what and why, but I was worried that four might be a little too much. I was also worried because when I get to know the different characters I really want the story to be about them, not about everyone else and I thought that maybe that would happen in this book. Surprisingly none of my worries came about. Each of the four characters stories was told in a way that didn't take away from the other characters stories. In fact, each one enhanced that others. That was really refreshing.

I read this book quickly, but I was taken aback by how many characters it had. There is a reason it had a family tree in the front, and while the story mostly focuses on the main four, there was some confusion for me sometimes with mention of other people. Although, I will admit that sometime I read for the purpose of finding out the ending that I miss important details (it's a large reason why I reread so many books).

My favorite thing in this book was that the main characters actually talked to each other to solve the conflict. Surprise! Communication works! It isn't something that is seen often in novels, and I found it refreshing.

I'd definitely read more from this family.
