Blog Tour: The Rent Collector by Camron Wright

The Rent Collector by Camron Wright
Now Available in Paperback

Book Description:

Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not working. Just when things seem worst, Sang Ly learns a secret about the ill-tempered rent collector who comes demanding money--a secret that sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past. The Rent Collector is a story of hope, of one woman’s journey to save her son and another woman’s chance at redemption. It demonstrates that even in a dump in Cambodia--perhaps especially in a dump in Cambodia--everyone deserves a second chance.

Book Trailer:

Review:

The Rent Collector is an enlightening and inspiring read! If you are needing something to help you get in a thankful frame of mind this holiday season, you should read this book. Realizing that people actually live in a dump, and have to survive off the garbage of others really helps you count your blessings!

I am all for ups and downs in the books I read, but I definitely need to have a feeling of hope when the downs are outweighing the ups. The Rent Collector really delivers with this idea of hope. The Stung Meanchey way of life is heartbreaking, but I loved the focus on not giving up. And improving one's self.

Knowing that The Rent Collector is based on real people makes it all the more touching. There are a few swear words, and the people of Stung Meanchey live in very harsh and violent conditions, but the positives of this story outweighed the negatives, and I'm really glad I read it.

Blog Tour: My Name Used to be Muhammad by Tito Momen with Jeff Benedict

My Name Used to be Muhammad by Tito Momen with Jeff Benedict

Book Description:

The True Story of a Muslim Who Became a Christian.

Tito Momen was raised Muhammad Momen. He was born in Nigeria and was taught to observe the strict teachings of Islam. At age five he woke at 4:45 every morning to attend the mosque and perform dawn prayer with the other men in his village. Training to memorize the Qur’an began at age six. It was at this same age that he began copying the entire Qur’an word for word. He was being raised to emerge as a leader among clerics, capable of leading a jihad, or holy struggle, to convert nonbelievers to Islam. However, Tito’s path took an unexpected turn when he was introduced to Christianity. His decision to believe in Jesus Christ cost him his family and his freedom. Tito thought he would spend his remaining days enduring a life sentence in an uncivilized Egyptian prison. For fifteen years he suffered and waited and prayed. Tito said, “I never gave up hope. I never stopped believing.” Although he was falsely imprisoned, beaten, and ridiculed, Tito’s remarkable true story is one of faith, forgiveness, and testimony that God does hear and answer prayers.

Review:

When I heard about this book I was intrigued. I've often felt that ignorance breeds hatred, especially when it comes to other cultures and religions, so I jumped at the chance to review this book hoping to gain a better understanding of what Muslims believe.

My Name Used To Be Muhammad is very eye opening to the practices of Tito's particular group of Muslims. It was interesting to learn how various groups have interpreted the Qur'an so differently. Tito grew up with very strict observances and interpretations, and even he was surprised once he left his home to learn how differently other Muslims worshiped.

Although many of the practices described were somewhat unusual to me, it was the abuse (especially against women and children) in the name of Allah was quite disturbing. I can't wrap my mind around the idea that any non-loving action is what God would want. How can one be so devout and then harm others because they don't worship exactly as you do?

It was hard to read certain parts of this book. I felt somewhat uncomfortable reading about Tito's rebellious time of life, and about certain things that happened to him in prison.

While I learned quite a few things that Muslims do in their religious practices, I didn't learn as much about why they do them as I had hoped. But, several times in the book Tito tried to ask questions about his beliefs and he was yelled at, and sometimes abused. So, maybe the why isn't really known-at least not amongst those who were taught as he was.

My Name Used To Be Muhammad is the kind of book that makes you very aware of your blessings. I am so happy that I live in the USA, and that I have the freedom to worship as I choose without fear of being arrested, tortured, or killed. I am so grateful that as a woman I am able to play an active role in my family and society. I am valued!

Blog Tour: One Sweet Cupcake by Janell Brown

One Sweet Cupcake: Professional Decorating and Recipe Secrets Made Easy

One Sweet Cupcake: Professional Decorating and Recipe Secrets Made Easy

Book Description:

Winner of Food Network's Cupcake Wars, Janell Brown, gives expert advice on all aspects of cupcake baking, including ingredients, techniques, and equipment. You'll also learn the basics of cupcake decorating, along with ideas for themes, seasons, and holidays. Discover all these sweet secrets for making your cupcakes look professional and taste great.

Review:

I love the cover and the pictures in One Sweet Cupcake. The cupcakes look so delicious!

Although I was practically drooling when I finished looking through the book, I was a bit overwhelmed. It didn't seem really geared toward your average baker.

I decided on two recipes, Peanut Butter Swirl and Grasshopper. I really liked how the cupcake part had nearly the same recipe, so I could test both recipes at once. However, I was horrified to find no baking time for either of these recipes. I need a ballpark time, not just telling me it's done when a toothpick comes out clean and it springs back at my touch. Luckily the cupcakes in the previous section said 20-25 min, so I had an idea of where to start.

Other than the missing baking time, the instructions were pretty easy to follow. But, the mint recipe said to core the cupcake for the ganache and I wasn't sure how to do that. It would have been nice having a note on that recipe or a section in the book with tips on things like that. As it was I just used a spoon to dig out a bit in the center. That seemed to work, but I'm not sure if that's what was intended.

In general I'm not a dark or semisweet chocolate fan, and I found that I didn't care for the flavor of the chocolate base. The filling and frosting flavors definitely help, but if I were to make more of these chocolate based cupcakes I'd definitely use a cake mix. It would be much easier and I prefer the flavor.

That said, my husband and I shared these with our co-workers to see what they thought. The Grasshopper seemed to be the favorite, although both were enjoyed by most of our tasters. The Grasshopper was more moist, and one taster enjoyed it so much he was speechless.

The beginning of the book talks about having basic ingredients that most people would have on hand, and for the most part I did have the ingredients, but there were a few things I didn't have. Especially with the non-chocolate based cupcakes-vanilla bean paste isn't a staple in my kitchen.

Spotlight: Follow Me to Zion by Andrew D. Olsen and Jolene S. Allphin

Book Description:

James G. Willie knew the trek would be arduous when he left Iowa City in July 1856, leading 500 handcart pioneers on a 1,300-mile journey across the plains.

But he could not have known that his people would run out of food while still hundreds of miles from Salt Lake City nor that the winter of 1856 would begin in the middle of October with prolonged, severe storms. Sixty-nine members of his company would die along the way. Yet from this tragedy emerged triumphant stories of personal endurance, courage, heroism, and unwavering faith.

Follow Me to Zion recounts 20 compelling stories of members of the Willie handcart company and their rescuers. Dozens of full-color images by artist Julie Rogers enrich this keepsake volume, which pays tribute to the men, women, and children who have become enduring witnesses of the power of faith and sacrifice.

Here you will find excerpts from their own accounts of the journey, learn what those faithful pioneers did after reaching the Salt Lake Valley, and read reflections on their lives by descendants.
The simple words “Follow Me to Zion,” cross-stitched onto small pieces of fabric kept in the journal of a handcart pioneer, are an invitation that still calls to us today.

The stories and paintings in this beautiful volume can inspire us to live true to our faith and reach out to help others do likewise.

Review:

This blog is mostly for book reviews, but I was given the opportunity to review an album, and after hearing a sample of Hudson Lights' music, I wanted to help share their talent.

Like most albums I've heard, there are some excellent songs, and others that I didn't really love. But, even if some of the songs weren't really my thing, I have to say that these guys have excellent voices! They have a great sound, and I'd recommend checking them out.

My absolute favorite song on the album is the first song, "Hold On to Me". While I'd heard most of the other songs the group covered before, this one was new to me and I loved it!

The Album has 11 songs, some old and some new:

Hold On To Me
Brave
Beautiful Day
Eleanor Rigby
Good To Me
Autumn Leaves
You Make My Dreams Come True
The Nearness of You
Love Never Fails
Can't Take That Away
Poor Wayfaring Stranger

Review: Pocket Full of Posies by Julie Coulter Bellon

Pocket Full of Posies by Julie Coulter Bellon

Book Description:

They say to keep your friends close and your enemies closer . . .

Hostage Negotiation Team member Bart Gutierrez is shocked to find Lucy Aguayo, a girl he knew as a teenager, working for the deadly Castillo drug cartel. This revelation uncovers a secret in Bart's family so big it forces him to accept a dangerous offer: infiltrate the cartel to keep his family safe. Once inside the cartel’s headquarters he discovers that a large-scale attack on America is imminent and the only way to prevent it is to bring Lucy in on his plans---and hope she doesn’t betray him.

Lucy Aguayo has become a key player in the Castillo cartel, but not for money or power---she's on a mission of vengeance for her father's murder. Just when she gets a chance to bring down the cartel leader responsible, Bart Gutierrez appears, stirring up buried feelings and disrupting all her plans. But as the enemy closes in from all sides, Lucy must choose between being free from her past or finding justice for it. Can she give up everything she’s ever worked for and reach for something more?

Review:

Julie Coulter Bellon's Hostage Negotiation Series is complete with action and romance. If you've read all three books in the series, you'll recognize characters from the other books; however, each book can stand on its own. This aspect is a winner for me with a series, especially if it has been awhile since I've read the other books.

The cover and blurb for Pocket Full of Posies drew me in to this story. It is clean and entertaining, and I especially liked that the romance felt believable due to the characters knowing each other in the past. There were a few twists and turns I didn't see coming, and I enjoyed the happy ending.

I wasn't as drawn to Bart and Lucy as I was to the other characters in this series. Maybe that was due to the more extreme storyline of Pocket Full of Posies, or some things seeming to come together a little too easily. But, it was still enjoyable, and great for those looking for a quick read full of action (and a sweet romance).

About Author Julie Coulter Bellon:

Julie is married with eight children and ten published books. She loves to travel and her favorite cities are probably Athens, Paris, Ottawa, and London. She would love to visit Hawaii, Australia, Ireland, and Scotland someday. She's learning to play the bagpipes and she's not very good yet, (she thinks she sounds like a sick moose) but she's working on it. She loves to read, write, teach, watch Castle and Hawaii Five-O, and eat Canadian chocolate. Not necessarily in that order.

Review: Shannon's Hope by Josi S. Kilpack

Shannon's Hope by Josi S. Kilpack
Book Description:

Shannon’s troubled stepdaughter has been missing for two weeks. When Keisha finally calls, Shannon doesn’t hesitate to welcome her into her home — despite her husband, John’s, misgivings. As a pharmacist, Shannon has always taken an analytical view of Keisha’s addiction problems and feels that treating her underlying depression and providing a support system can break the bonds that have taken over her life.

When Keisha first begins breaking the rules, Shannon worries John will kick Keisha out and send her back to her druggie friends. Shannon commits to being even more diligent in helping Keisha. As more of her energy goes toward Keisha, a distance emerges between Shannon, her husband, and their twelve-year-old son, Landon. Shannon finds it easy to justify her own behavior as unconditional love, but as Keisha’s stumblings become dramatic falls, Shannon realizes this is no longer just about Keisha.

Shannon finds herself facing the reality that addiction comes in many forms. Can she shift her perspective from Keisha’s future — which was never hers to control — to her own? Can she keep from spiraling into a pattern of obsessive rescuing and find the strength to repair her own fractured relationships before she drives her husband and son away for good?

Review:

I've enjoyed reading all of the novels in The Newport Ladies Book Club series, and I was excited when I heard that Shannon's Hope had been released. Shannon played a very small role in the other books, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I found her story to be pretty interesting. It didn't suck me in-I could put in down without a problem, but Kilpack's writing ability helped me feel a connection to the characters, and I was interested to see what would happen with Shannon and her family.

I was bothered by all of the dishonesty in the story. I appreciated that it bothered Shannon too, although it was the sort of thing that made me feel a little uncomfortable just waiting for when and how the truth would come out and the repercussions from it.

I liked the message about helping people in our lives, both close loved ones and acquaintances. And, that the best way to help them might not be the way we want to help them.

About Author Josi S. Kilpack:

Josi S. Kilpack hated to read until her mother handed her a copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond when she was 13. From that day forward, she read everything she could get her hands on and accredits her writing “education” to the many novels she has “studied” since then. She began writing her first novel in 1998 and never stopped. Her novel, Sheep’s Clothing won the Whitney Award 2007 for Mystery/Suspense. Lemon Tart, the first book in the Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mystery series was a finalist in 2009.  Josi currently lives in Willard Utah with her husband, children and super-cute cat.
