by Hank Smith with Kathryn Jenkins

As the world’s greatest teacher, Jesus Christ used His skills as a storyteller to teach and inspire His followers. The parables of Christ contain a wealth of guidance, but the deeper meaning of His words can sometimes be difficult to decipher. Now, best-selling authors Hank Smith and Kathryn Jenkins—known and loved for their ability to approach gospel topics in a clear, light, and understandable way—take a careful look at the finer points of the Savior’s stories. They uncover the profound spiritual lessons hidden within and illustrate practical and accessible application for our day. In Living the Parables: Applying Christ’s Teachings to Our Lives, readers are presented with commentary from generations of Church leaders and religious scholars, as well as modern-day interpretations of the underlying significance of each account. This volume will inspire followers of Christ to draw on the power of His Atonement by embracing a deeper understanding of His parables.

Andrea's Review:

I found the Living the Parables to be such a timely read as it went along with my study of the New Testament. It is definitely a book to keep on hand and to refer back to. I appreciated the side explanations about things like why foot washing was so important in Jesus' day and the information about the writers of the Four Gospels. There were some jokes and humor (which I think Hank Smith is known for) that at times was a bit much for me, but on the whole I enjoyed the presentation. I liked the inclusion of historical and modern tidbits, along with quotes from prophets and apostles that helped me understand the why of many of the parables.

Rorie's Review:

I have never had the pleasure of hearing Hank Smith speak, but my oldest son has, and he really enjoyed the fireside. I was hesitant to read this book at first, mostly because I have to be in the right mood to read nonfiction. I'm glad I chose to read it though.
With the new Come, Follow Me program this year, I've been making more of an effort to study the New Testament than I ever have. This book is a great resource to use alongside my studies. The author does a really good job at explaining the meanings of the parables, as well as giving the reader several valuable insights.

I'm hoping that I can get my oldest to read this book too, I really think he'd get a lot out of it as well.

Tarah's Review:

What a great book to have this year while studying the New Testament. Especially if you have a family with kids that like Hank Smith. I love how this book is broken down. It is really useful and easy to find a specific parable if that is what you are studying. I enjoy how this book is written in more of a someone talking to me style. Smith makes it not only enjoyable, but easy to understand. More importantly, he makes it applicable to every day use.

A lot of the parables were not easy for me to understand, but the culture and the setting is explained in a way that makes the parables really come alive. In fact, while reading one of the chapters I felt like it was something I really wanted my kids to hear. I have five kids ranging in age from 6-13. My three older kids really sat down and listened to me read an entire chapter. They even requested I read the next one. Is that going to happen every time and with every family? No. However, when they do have questions it's nice that this book explains the parables in a way that is interesting for me and entertaining for them.

I will be using this book often and I will definitely keep it and use during this years study of the New Testament.

Rorie's Review:

We just received this book, so haven't had time to do more than skim through the pages so far, but it looks like it'll be fun to use. My second son really enjoys drawing, so I got this with him in mind, but my younger two have expressed some interest in using it as well.

I must admit, I wasn't expecting the art to be as...cartoony...as it is. It's still cute and looks fun to draw, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I do like that the author gives several tips on how to draw basics, such as hands, faces, etc. I'm definitely no artist - I can barely draw a passable stick figure - but I might even give it a try.

Andrea's Review:

Both of my children like drawing, so when I heard about this book I thought they might enjoy it. Sadly it wasn't a good fit for my 15-year-old and 12-year-old. Thankfully I have some wonderful neighbors with several kids (most younger than my kids) and they were happy to give it a try.

The three-year-old boy liked the pictures. The six-year-old girl and nine-year-old girl liked how it looked but thought the drawing was too hard. There are some activities in the book, and they enjoyed the word search.

It turned out to be a really good fit for the 11-year-old boy. He thought it was really fun and liked it a lot. His favorite activities were drawing himself sneaking past the sleeping Lamanites and staying on the straight and narrow path. He like how it told the stories-it made them more fun and easier to understand. He said he learned that Samuel the Lamanite wasn't seen again after preaching on the wall.

While not for everyone, it is a big hit with the right kids.

Tarah's Review:

My three older kids have all looked through this book, but there must be something super intimidating about actually drawing, because only one of them actually tried anything they saw. No, I take that back. One of my younger ones actually had a lot of fun drawing a fly, and something else, and I was actually pretty impressed with how her picture turned out.

It wasn't quite what I was thinking a "how to draw" book would be, but I liked the stories that came with it, and the different activities. The rules at the beginning of the book I didn't really agree with, but I'm not an artist, so what do I know about drawing with pen and not erasing things? I didn't super love the drawing of the greek looking statues. Pretty sure those statues are naked. Not that the drawings in the book have any details that you could actually see, but they were not my favorite things in the book. Here is my 10 year olds review of it.

"It looks fun. I liked how it showed you how to draw things in the beginning, and the rules were very funny. I didn't do the no erasing, but I did do the no crossing out and no crumpling the paper. I also liked how it showed you all the different ways you can draw things, and the instructions on how to do it. I tried to draw Samuel the Lamanite on the wall, and the gems. The Samuel the Lamanite turned out well."

A Proper Scandal by Esther Hatch

Book Description:

Grace Sinclair has been callously cast out of her home. And though taken in as an orphaned child by the vicar and his wife, her unsurpassed beauty makes it impossible for her to remain in the vicar’s household—with two daughters of their own about to enter Society, the vicar and his wife see Grace as nothing but competition. Thankfully, Grace’s estranged Aunt Bell has agreed to take her in to her home in London. But Grace soon learns her situation has just gotten much worse.

It takes only a moment’s acquaintance for Grace to ascertain that her aunt has married a detestable rake. And Aunt Bell, recognizing the danger of having her lovely niece too near her husband, gives Grace an ultimatum: the young woman has two weeks to find a man to marry, after which she will be turned out. With no experience in the art of attracting a husband, Grace quickly realizes that a worthy suitor might not be so easy to ensnare.

Review:

Esther Hatch is a talented author, and I was excited for the opportunity to read her latest novel, A Proper Scandal. My attention was captured right off as Grace, an orphan, was told she would no longer be living with the vicar and his family who had taken her in years earlier when her parents died. The situation had been a good one for her initially, but as time went on and she became more beautiful, the vicar's wife seemed to resent her beauty as no one noticed her daughters. Grace worked hard around the vicarage, but it was never enough to be truly accepted. Although the idea of being invited to live with her only living relative had some appeal, she hated to leave the only town she'd ever known. And once she arrived in London she discovered that the invitation to live with her aunt and new step-uncle wasn't what it first appeared.

As the story unfolds Grace's safety is threatened and time after time she's made to feel that she is only wanted for her beauty and large dowry. Her only option for safety is to convince a certain man to marry her. The process goes against Grace's high morals, but she's unable to find a better alternative. The ensuing entrapment/courtship made for an entertaining story packed with varying emotions.

I liked the main characters and appreciated their depth. I also liked the bits of humor included that lighted the story up at times. This was a fast read for me, and I will definitely read more from this author.

Book Review: Behind the Light of Golowduyn by Deborah M. Hathaway

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51URvNmIyFL.jpg

Book Description:

She’s the keeper of Golowduyn Lighthouse. He’s the captain who shipwrecked on her watch. A marriage of convenience can save her home—if secrets don’t destroy it first.Abigail Moore will do anything to keep Golowduyn Lighthouse shining brightly, even if she must do so alone. When a shipwreck occurs near her home one stormy evening—bringing with it a dashing captain keen to offer his aid at every turn—her days of isolation vanish. Captain Gavin Kendricks didn’t expect to end his naval career by crashing his ship against the rugged cliffs of Cornwall. When he’s pulled from the sea by the fearless and quick-tempered Miss Moore, a tentative friendship forms between them, and he begins to realize what has been missing from his life. Before either of them can explore these newfound stirrings, death and deception hit Golowduyn, and Abigail is left with a choice. Either she loses everything she has ever loved, or she marries the captain and accepts his help. Unable to give up the lighthouse, she agrees to the union, and they work together to see that the light does not diminish. But when her childhood secrets are unearthed, and their property falls victim to troubling defacement, their marriage threatens to crumble. Gavin fights to gain her confidence, but only Abigail can forget the crippling memories of her past to trust Gavin with Golowduyn—and her heart.

Review:

I only have one complaint about this book, and it's pretty minor. And it is mostly about my ineptitude, not the book. I can not pronounce Golowduyn. Every time it came up in the story (frequently) my mind would stutter over the word. I appreciated the pronunciation guide, but even after reading that, I still couldn't remember how to pronounce the word.

Anyway, enough of that and on to the good stuff. I really enjoyed this story. It was a quick read, and all of the characters had enough depth to really feel like you got to know them. Gavin was almost too good to be true. Very patient, forgiving and understanding, even when he didn't have to be. Abigail was both strong and fragile at the same time. She had built up quite the wall around her to protect herself and had such a hard time letting anyone in.

The author does a great job giving the reader a visual of the area. Cornwall sounds like a place I would love to visit. I don't know that I would enjoy living by the ocean, but I do love visiting it.

This is a book I will recommend to my friends and I look forward to reading more from this author.

About the Author:

Deborah M. Hathaway graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor's degree in English and an emphasis in Creative Writing. As a young girl, she devoured Jane Austen's novels while watching and re-watching every adaptation of Pride & Prejudice she could, entirely captured by all things Regency and romance.

Throughout her life, she wrote many short stories, poems, and essays, but it was not until after her marriage that she was finally able to complete her first romance novel, attributing the completion to her courtship with, and love of, her charming, English husband.

Deborah finds her inspiration for her novels in her everyday experiences with her husband and children and during her travels to the United Kingdom, where she draws on the beauty of the country in such places as Ireland, Yorkshire, and her beloved Cornwall.

Blog Tour: Finding Anne de Bourgh by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen

Finding Anne de Bourgh by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen

Book Description:

As heiress of Rosings Park, Anne de Bourgh’s health is of utmost importance to her mother, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Thus, following the shock of a recent fire at Rosings Park, the young woman is spirited away to Brighton to take the cure. While her domineering mother is bent on healing her daughter’s sickly constitution to secure her a suitable match, Anne herself is far more concerned with sketching the flora and fauna of the lovely sea town. It is in pursuit of artistic inspiration among the flowers that Anne becomes acquainted with Mr. Owen Talbot, a charming man with whom Anne feels an immediate connection, notwithstanding their differing stations.

But despite their growing esteem for one another, the couple faces an insurmountable problem: Lady Catherine has set her sights on a rich, well-connected man for her daughter, and Mr. Talbot is simply too common. With their love in jeopardy, the couple soon faces far graver problems. There has been a murder in Brighton, and Anne is innocently drawn into an amateur investigation that ultimately traces its roots to her own family. With a frightening foreshadowing regarding the de Bourghs, Anne begins to question whom she can truly trust.

Andrea's Review:

Finding Anne de Bourgh was an unexpected delight. I avoid reading book descriptions right before starting a book (I don't want too much given away), so I really didn't know what to expect besides a Regency romance. I was pleasantly surprised to get a mystery, and thought it was well done.

The author noted that she is a Jane Austen fan and her intrigue with Anne de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice influenced her to write this novel. I'll admit that I hadn't given a second thought to Anne before this book. Her domineering mother always took the stage (next to the main characters) in Pride and Prejudice, but I enjoyed getting to know Anne in this novel. She definitely didn't fit the mold and much of the book involved her standing up for herself and coming out of her shell. I love the chance the author gave for Anne to shine, and find that it is a good lesson-we all have worth and value.

The Talbot family was very interesting, both with Lady Talbot's past and her hobby of solving murders. That was quite unexpected, especially for someone of her station. The closeness between her and her boys was endearing, and their quick acceptance of Anne showed the good people that they are.

If you've read Regency novels you're probably familiar with people flocking to sea side communities for "the cure" of sea bathing. The idea of having dippers (strong women who "dip" patrons in the sea) is quite foreign, but this is at least the second book I've read that had a focus on dipping, and it is very interesting.

This wasn't a fast read for me, but it was enjoyable. I was very surprised when the the main bad guy was revealed, and enjoyed that it caught me off guard. I would read more from this author.

Rorie's Review:

Never having read Pride and Prejudice, I wasn't familiar at all with the characters and events from that story that were referenced in this story, so I felt a bit lost at times. There were other times when I had to scroll back a few pages or chapters to try and figure out who a person was. I had a really hard time keeping track of all of the different characters in this story.

I had a really hard time connecting with Anne. She was, to put it very bluntly, nothing more than a doormat. She let her mother completely run her life and very rarely stood up for herself. As the story continues, she was able to find a backbone and assert herself more, but it took a really, really long time.

The story didn't really engage me, and I found my mind wandering a lot throughout. Maybe if I was familiar with Pride and Prejudice, I would have enjoyed this story more. The climax of the story was well-written though, and I did enjoy reading that part. Throughout the whole story, I was trying to figure out who the bad guy was. I had a few different people picked out and was happy to find out that I was right with one of them.

Blog Tour: Charlotte's Promise by Jennifer Moore

Charlotte's Promise by Jennifer Moore

Book Description:

One year ago Charlotte Bower’s life was ripped apart when Creek Indians attacked, killed her parents, and separated her from her young brother—now, she will stop at nothing to find him. After a year of captivity, she has finally made her escape. Her search will begin in New Orleans, where captives were taken after the raid. But how to reach a city hundreds of miles away? As she watches men boarding a waiting ship, Charlotte formulates a bold plan: if it’s men they need for the ship’s crew, it’s a man they’ll get. Taking on her childhood nickname, Charlie, it is all too easy to gain passage on the New Orleans-bound vessel. Easy, that is, until Charlie is caught . . .

From the moment he sets eyes on the new deckhand, Captain Alden Thatcher knows one thing for certain: Charlie Bower is no man. But for reasons of his own, he keeps her secret. As their journey progresses, however, the voyage is increasingly ill-fated. With danger ever present, Charlie and the captain find themselves relying on one another in ways they’d never imagined. As they draw closer to her goal, Charlotte is faced with the most perilous adventure of all—an adventure that may risk her heart.

Andrea's Review:

In Moore's book, The Shipbuilder's Wife, we are introduced to Alden, Captain of the Belladonna. He isn't a main character in that book, but we do get to see that he is a good friend and his adopted family means a lot to him. There is mention in that book of his personal heartbreak, and I was happy to see that Moore gave Alden his own story with Charlotte's Promise.

I was drawn in right away by Charlotte's dire situation. She proved to be brave and determined as she escaped from her captors in an effort to keep her promise to find her little brother. She disguised herself as a boy and managed to find work on a ship. Even though the work was physically exhausting and at times dangerous, she powered through knowing it was the path she had to take to get to her brother.

Alden showed himself to be a good man right away when he kept "Charlie" on to save her from her abductors even though he had realized she wasn't a boy, and when he kept up the ruse for her sake.

This was a quick read for me. It had wonderful build up and then seemed a bit rushed in the resolution. I would probably read it again, and will definitely read more of Moore's books.

Rorie's Review:

Jennifer Moore has a talent for drawing the reader into the story, and making us feel like we're experiencing everything right along with the characters.

I've always been a sucker for stories where the female disguises herself as a male in order to escape something, so I was excited to have a chance to read this book. I really admired her strength and determination to accomplish whatever she set her mind to. (Plus, I've enjoyed all of the other Jennifer Moore books I've read, so I figured I'd be in for an enjoyable escape.) I not only enjoyed getting to know Charlie and Alden, but also each of the crew aboard the Belladonna. While most of the story focused on the relationship between the two main characters, Charlie also develops some significant relationships with some of the other sailors, which really helps give the story layers.

When I started reading this book, I didn't pay attention to what time period it was in, so I just assumed they were in the middle of the Revolutionary War. (Because when you think of a war between America and Great Britain, isn't that what you automatically think of?) It wasn't until I read the author's notes at the end that I realized it was the War of 1812 instead. Which makes complete sense, since Louisiana wasn't even a part of the U.S. until the early 1800's. Clearly, I need a refresher on my history. Anyway, as I'm certain I've just proven, this is a war that I really know very little about, so I enjoyed learning a bit more about some of the battles that took place then.

The story line is engaging, and I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters. This book will definitely make it onto my keeper shelf.

Tarah's Review:

I wasn't super sure what to expect with Charlotte's Promise because I didn't really love Moore's last book, and this was a continuation of some of the characters. Honestly though, you don't have to read the last one to enjoy this one.  This was, for me, a quick enjoyable read. I liked the story line, I enjoyed the characters, and I mostly enjoyed the pacing. Moore's last couple books seem to have great build up and then the story just ends. I felt that a little bit with this one, but not as much as previous novels.

I admired Charlie and her strength of character. I'm not sure I'd be able to endure everything she endured and continued to endure to find her brother. It still baffles me how she was able to fool that many people that she was a boy, because her language and the mannerisms that were described didn't seem very boyish, but I guess that was the point of the story.

Alden was also an enjoyable read. He makes for a great main character. In fact, even though I didn't like the previous book, both Charlie and Alden make me want to go back and reread it to refresh my memory and see Alden in action in the last book.

Despite her ire, he knows he must make every attempt to make it right—and hope she will find a way to forgive him and give their love another chance.

Review:

I'm a sucker for first love, second chances stories, so Upon My Heart Forever appealed to me right away. I liked the characters, and thought that even though this was a novella, the development wasn't lacking. The way Clara and Ethan meet after having been apart for six years was quite entertaining.

I enjoyed the post Revolutionary setting. A few things seemed like they may not have fit that era, but on the whole it was a clean, enjoyable, and quick read. I would read more from this author.

Book Review: Impeccable Petunia Part 1 & 2 by Katie Christine

Book Descriptions:

Part I:

Relegated to a life without hope for anything more than a squalid existence at the bottom of the pecking order, Petunia, a backyard chicken, lives out her days in a flock where gossip flows as currency, with malice at its heart and boredom by its side. Petunia’s plight seems insurmountable until a strange woman’s tears hurl her through a labyrinth that she never anticipated and into a friendship she might not survive.

Part II:

As The Two Tails opens, the flock confronts a spiral of death and disappearance. Ensnared by a rapacious raccoon and desperate for a way out, Petunia, the backyard chicken, must throw herself at the mercy of the dark, open road with little more than gumption, a pair of useless wings, and a dubious companion as her guide.

Review:

I was hoping that my kids would enjoy these two books, since the description sounded similar to The Nocturnals, which they love. My 10- year- old started to read Claws, Paws, Feathers and Jaws, but gave up after awhile because he just couldn't get in to it. After reading a few chapters myself, I could understand why. I think these books are meant for children, or maybe middle-grade readers, but the writing comes across as more adultish. The author uses a lot of big words that I just don't think kids will understand.

The second book, The Two Tails, was better. The story line was more engaging and easier to get into. By the last 1/4 of the book though, the story was lagging and I found my attention wandering. I think that these could have been very entertaining stories if they weren't so wordy - especially if they're meant to be children's literature. I'll encourage my kids to read the second book and see if they like it better than the first one.

Blog Tour: Undercover Honeymoon by Kari Iroz

Undercover Honeymoon by Kari Iroz

Book Description:

Wedding bells are finally ringing for Jacklyn "Jack" Wyatt and her FBI-agent fiancĂ©, Damon Wade. After their adventurous beginning, the happy couple finds the relative calm leading up to their big day, a huge relief. Unfortunately, it seems that the peace and quiet were too good to last. As they embark on their honeymoon, a weeklong cruise, Jack can't shake the feeling that something is off with her new husband. When she stumbles upon a secret plot—one in which her husband is a key player—she realizes this getaway will be anything but smooth sailing. When she delves into the shady happenings aboard the ship, she realizes Damon's involvement is just the tip of the iceberg—she has become an unwitting player in a deadly conspiracy, and in such close quarters, there is no escape. Now, Jack has no choice but to work with her spouse to unravel the truth before their happily ever after—and their lives—are ended all too soon.

Rorie's Review:

Welcome back to the hilarity that is Jack and Damon's relationship. They're finally married and heading off for their dream honeymoon... but it just wouldn't be complete without a bit (or more) of craziness, danger and humor thrown in.

I have loved this couple ever since A Date With Danger came out, so I was more than happy to dive into this story. Iroz brings back her quirky, somewhat sarcastic humor, which I absolutely love. Read this book in public at your own risk because you might laugh out loud a time or ten.

I still think the first book in this series was my favorite, but this one comes in a very close second. I don't know if there will be more from Jack and Damon, but it wouldn't make me sad if there was.

Andrea's Review:

I was so excited when I heard that Kari Iroz had a new book coming out. A Date with Danger is one of my favorites when I'm looking for a laugh, and I was thrilled to see that Jack and Damon's story was continuing in the third book in this series.

The laughs you're used to from Iroz keep coming in Undercover Honeymoon. I was drawn into the story right away-who wouldn't be with the wedding dress mishap? I really like Jack and Damon. We didn't get a lot of Damon in this story, which I missed, but we do get an adventure and a happy ending.

There were some twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Jack still gets into all sorts of trouble, but her knack for helping solve crimes carries on. There's a betrayal that I thought would cause deeper issues than it did, and my attention waned a bit, but overall it was an enjoyable read.

Tarah's Review:

Beautiful cover, and beautiful story. This was one that I didn't want to put down and may or may not have stayed up entirely way too late (early?) reading it. I love that there is just something different about Jack, but I do wish she wasn't so doubtful of herself, although that is entirely realistic.  Damon continues to be wonderful, even if he doesn't quite communicate everything with Jack, but he is slowly learning.

I loved the imagery of the cruise and it seriously made me want to go on one right now. I could do without all the bad guy and criminals, but doesn't a cruise sound lovely? Jack's enjoyment of everything is contagious.

There were plot twists that I didn't see coming, and characters I wasn't expecting. This made for a wonderful story. One that I will definitely read again and pass on to all my reading friends.
