Veil of Pearls

Veil of PearlsVeil of Pearls by M.L. Tyndall

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Veil of Pearls is about a runaway slave that flees Barbados to Charleston, South Carolina. Adalia is a quarter negro, and her light skin is part of what allows her to remain free when she escapes. Before her parents died and she was enslaved, her mother taught her how to heal with herbs, and she is able to find work in Charleston healing slaves and assisting a doctor.

Adalia's beauty catches the eye of a Morgan Rutledge, son of a wealthy Charleston plantation owner. She initially spurns his advances, but eventually gets caught up in his alluring high society lifestyle all the while telling herself that she's going to teach Morgan about God and how slavery is wrong.

This was an enjoyable story complete with suspense and romance that depicted the importance of honesty, both with others and yourself.

This was my first M.L. Tyndall novel. I am happy to have discovered her, and look forward to reading more of her work.

Veil of Pearls's publication date is July 1, 2012. Thank you to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC.

30 copies of Veil of Pearls are up for grabs on Goodreads if you are interested in entering.
